Thers's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people premission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

The worst thing is to feel that as a photographer I am benefiting from someone else's tragedy. This idea haunts me. It's something I have to reckon with every day because I know that if I ever allowed genuine compassion to be overtaken by personal ambition, I will have sold my soul. The only way I can justify my role is to have respect for the other person's predicament. The extent to which I do that is the extent to which I become accepted by the other; and to that extent, I can accept myself.

In our time of proliferating natural disasters, it is shocking to learn that fires are most often started by humans. In eighty percent of all instances, man is at the root of the devastation, causing incalculable damage to other humans, as well as animals and nature. These photographs were made near Lake Arrowhead, California, two weeks after the fire was contained in 2007. The Green Valley mountain was vacant, the area was empty of a human presence, empty of hope. The vital scent of smoke was haunting. In capturing the ephemeral disaster of the fire, I was compelled to share the life that remained in the objects left behind. In a time of catastrophe, the items we decide to take and cast aside are telling of one's values. The display of inanimate objects with human-like characteristics came alive during the conception of these photographs. The beauty of photography is in its representation of a moment in time. In this case, the photographs represent portraits of people in a time of desolation. The person who once drove the car now leaning against the tree, the father that used the hose to water his garden, what is missing becomes the subject and the context of the image. Just as much as these are portraits of the people who lost their things, they are portraits of the individual who may have started the fire. In society today, our sense of worth is increasingly entangled with our material worth. Even through the toughest times, the beauty of life can be seen through people.

Noam Chomsky is a Graffiti Artist

As you drive west on the 10fwy, which is where I spend 3 hours of my day 5 days a week, you will always have the wonderful backdrop of graffiti all around you. More specifically between Crenshaw and Arlington on the north wall you will see a new type of graffiti. The wall is wonderfully decorated with quotes from Chomsky, Ginsberg and Emerson. It is such a refreshing thing to see our graffiti broken up with ideas. I wish people would spend less time texting in traffic and more time observing the city.

LA2- Hit by my own car

I was parked on Abbot Kinney, unloading may car. I was standing behind my car with the hatch up pulling things out of the back. When all of a sudden my car decides to reverse into my legs. What the fuck??!! I look up in confusion and I see a white Ford something trying to parallel park his boat in a spot that was intended for, maybe a mini cooper. I walked around to look at the damage the car did to mine and nothing was found. The bastard hit my car in a horrible attempt to park his car. In the Ford were a couple, maybe late 50's. I stood and waited the 7 minutes you took them to park, assuming an apology was due. They get out of there car, totally aware of what just happen, glance at me but look away. I stand there staring at them in disbelief. They are 10 feet away from me and they act as if I am not there. Now, I could of easily said something, but my curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to see if they would say anything at all. They didn't. They locked up their car, crossed the street and entered Hal's to enjoy there 50.00 lunch. I could not believe that no apology was extended. So I did what any person would do, I kicked his car.

The first moment I realized I fell in love with Los Angeles was in 2002. I was driving on Echo Park Blvd heading towards the 101. It was near sunset and the echo park lake was to my right. The light in LA is unlike any other in the world. The orange light hit the water so beautifully. It was one of the most amazing sights I have ever seen. I was in love.
